One of the best things about a candle in a quality glass jar or tin is what happens after the wax runs out. A well-made candle vessel is too good to throw away, and with a little effort it can be cleaned and repurposed into something genuinely useful. Here is how to clean out your candle jars and what to do with them.
How to clean a candle jar
There are three reliable methods for removing the last of the wax from a candle jar:
The freezer method
This is the easiest and most effective method for most jars.
- Place the candle jar in the freezer for two to three hours.
- The wax will contract and pull away from the sides of the jar.
- Use a butter knife or spoon to pop the wax out in one piece.
- Wipe the inside of the jar with a paper towel to remove any residue.
- Wash with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
The hot water method
- Pour boiling water into the jar, leaving a few centimetres at the top.
- The wax will melt and float to the surface.
- Allow to cool completely. The wax will solidify on the surface and can be lifted out.
- Pour out the water, wipe the jar clean, and wash with warm soapy water.
- Note: do not pour wax down the drain as it can solidify and cause blockages.
The oven method
- Place the jar upside down on a foil-lined baking tray.
- Heat in the oven at 90 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes.
- The wax will melt and drip onto the foil.
- Remove carefully (the jar will be hot), wipe clean, and wash.
Removing the wick sustainer
Once the wax is out, you may find a small metal wick sustainer stuck to the base of the jar. This can usually be removed with a butter knife or by soaking in warm water for a few minutes.
What to do with clean candle jars
- Storage: Small jars are perfect for storing cotton buds, hair clips, jewellery, or stationery.
- Plant pots: A clean candle tin or jar makes a beautiful small planter for succulents, herbs, or small houseplants.
- Desk tidy: Use a larger jar to hold pens, pencils, or scissors on a desk.
- Kitchen storage: Clean jars work well for storing small quantities of spices, tea bags, or coffee.
- Bathroom storage: Perfect for cotton wool balls, hair ties, or small toiletries.
