Candles are one of life's simple pleasures, but they are also an open flame in your home. Following a few straightforward safety rules means you can enjoy them with complete peace of mind.
1. Never leave a burning candle unattended
This is the most important rule. Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep. It takes only seconds for an unattended flame to cause a fire.
2. Keep candles away from flammable materials
Maintain at least 30cm of clear space around any burning candle. Curtains, paper, books, dried flowers, and fabric are all fire hazards. Be especially careful with candles placed near windows where curtains can blow inward.
3. Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface
A candle that tips over is a serious hazard. Always use a proper candle holder or place your candle on a heat-resistant surface that will not be damaged by warmth from the vessel. Avoid placing candles on glass shelves or surfaces that can crack under heat.
4. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets
Place candles where they cannot be knocked over by a curious child or a passing cat. High shelves and mantelpieces are good options, provided they are away from flammable materials above.
5. Trim the wick to 5mm before every burn
A long wick produces a large, unstable flame that is more likely to flicker, spit, or cause the vessel to overheat. Keeping the wick trimmed is both a safety measure and a candle care habit.
6. Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time
Extended burning causes the vessel to overheat and the wick to mushroom, both of which increase risk. Allow the candle to cool completely before relighting.
7. Stop burning when 1cm of wax remains
Burning a candle to the very bottom can cause the vessel to crack or the base to overheat, potentially damaging the surface beneath. Always leave a small amount of wax at the base.
8. Use a snuffer to extinguish the flame
Blowing out a candle can send sparks or hot wax onto nearby surfaces. A snuffer extinguishes the flame safely and without mess.
9. Never use water to extinguish a candle
Water causes hot wax to splatter, which can cause burns and spread flame. Always use a snuffer or a candle lid if one is provided.
10. Check for draughts before lighting
A draught does not just affect burn quality. It can cause a flame to flicker toward nearby materials or blow the flame sideways in an unpredictable direction. Always light candles in a draught-free environment.
