Candle Snuffers: Why You Need One and How to Use It

A candle snuffer is one of those small accessories that makes a genuine difference to your candle experience. If you are still blowing out your candles, here is why a snuffer is worth adding to your collection and how to use one properly.

What is a candle snuffer?

A candle snuffer is a small tool designed to extinguish a candle flame without blowing on it. The most common design is a small bell or cone on the end of a long handle, which is placed over the flame to cut off its oxygen supply and extinguish it cleanly.

Why use a snuffer instead of blowing?

Blowing out a candle seems harmless, but it causes several problems:

  • Smoke: Blowing produces a plume of smoke that carries through the room and can leave a lingering burnt smell that competes with the candle's fragrance.
  • Wax disturbance: The force of blowing can disturb the liquid wax surface, causing splashing or an uneven surface that affects the next burn.
  • Wick displacement: Blowing can push the wick off-centre, which affects the quality of subsequent burns.
  • Soot deposits: The smoke from a blown-out candle can deposit soot on the vessel walls and the surrounding area.

A snuffer eliminates all of these problems. The flame is extinguished cleanly, with no smoke, no disturbance to the wax, and no soot.

How to use a candle snuffer

  1. Hold the snuffer by the handle and position the bell or cone directly over the flame.
  2. Lower it slowly until it covers the flame completely.
  3. Hold it in place for two to three seconds to ensure the flame is fully extinguished.
  4. Lift the snuffer away carefully. The wick may glow briefly before going out completely.

Types of candle snuffer

  • Bell snuffer: The classic design. A small bell on a long handle. Works well for most candles.
  • Cone snuffer: A cone-shaped cap that fits over the flame. Particularly effective for candles in deep vessels.
  • Wick dipper: A different tool that bends the wick into the liquid wax to extinguish it, then straightens it again. This method coats the wick in wax, making it easier to relight and reducing smoke even further.

Candle snuffers as gifts

A candle snuffer makes a thoughtful addition to a candle gift. Paired with a quality candle, it shows that you have thought about the whole candle experience rather than just the candle itself. It is a small detail that candle lovers genuinely appreciate.
