Candles for the Home: How to Choose the Right Candle for Every Space

A candle is one of the simplest and most effective ways to transform the atmosphere of a room. But choosing the right candle for each space in your home takes a little thought. Here is a practical guide to matching candles to rooms, moods, and moments.

Start with the size of the room

The size of your candle should broadly match the size of your room. A small tealight or votive candle will barely register in a large open-plan living space. A large, heavily fragranced jar candle in a small bathroom can be overwhelming. As a general guide:

  • Small rooms (bathroom, bedroom, study): A small to medium candle of 100 to 200g is usually sufficient.
  • Medium rooms (living room, dining room): A medium to large candle of 200 to 300g will fill the space comfortably.
  • Large or open-plan spaces: A large candle of 300g or more, or multiple candles placed around the room.

Match the scent to the room's purpose

Living room

The living room is a social space, so choose a scent that is welcoming and pleasant without being polarising. Warm, woody scents like sandalwood or cedarwood, soft florals, or a light vanilla all work well. Avoid anything too sharp or medicinal.

Bedroom

The bedroom calls for calming, sleep-friendly scents. Lavender is the classic choice, but chamomile, cedarwood, and soft musks are equally effective. Avoid energising scents like citrus or mint in the bedroom.

Bathroom

Fresh, clean scents suit bathrooms best. Eucalyptus, sea salt, white tea, and light citrus all feel spa-like and complement the function of the space. Keep the candle size modest in a small bathroom.

Kitchen

Avoid heavy florals or musks in the kitchen as they can clash with cooking smells. Light citrus, fresh herbs, or subtle spice notes work well and feel clean and appetite-friendly.

Home office

For focus and productivity, choose stimulating but not distracting scents. Peppermint, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus are all associated with improved concentration. Keep the fragrance light.

Hallway

The hallway sets the tone for your whole home. A welcoming, neutral scent like fresh linen, soft vanilla, or a light floral creates a positive first impression for anyone entering.

Think about the time of day

Lighter, fresher scents tend to suit daytime burning, while warmer, richer scents feel more appropriate in the evening. If you burn candles throughout the day, consider having two or three different candles on rotation to suit different times and moods.
