How to Make Your Candle Last Longer (7 Simple Tips)

Getting the most from a quality candle isn't just about lighting it and walking away. A few simple habits can double your burn time, protect your fragrance throw, and keep your candle looking beautiful from first light to last.

1. Always trim the wick to 5mm before every burn

A long wick creates a large, flickering flame that burns through wax too quickly and produces soot. Before every single burn — including the very first — trim your wick to approximately 5mm (about ¼ inch). A pair of dedicated wick trimmers makes this effortless, but small scissors work just as well.

2. Let the wax pool reach the edges on the first burn

This is the single most important rule of candle care. Wax has "memory" - if you extinguish your candle before the melt pool reaches the full diameter of the vessel, it will tunnel down the centre on every subsequent burn, wasting the wax around the edges. For most of our Scented Soy Candles, allow 2–3 hours on the first burn.

3. Never burn for more than 4 hours at a time

Extended burns cause the wick to "mushroom" (carbon builds up at the tip), the vessel to overheat, and the fragrance to degrade. Stick to a maximum of 4 hours per session, then allow the candle to cool completely before relighting.

4. Keep your candle away from draughts

Draughts - from open windows, fans, or air conditioning - cause uneven burning, excessive flickering, and rapid fragrance loss. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from air currents.

5. Store candles in a cool, dark place

UV light and heat cause wax to discolour and fragrance oils to degrade. Store unused candles away from direct sunlight and radiators. A cupboard or drawer is ideal.

6. Stop burning when 1cm of wax remains

Burning a candle to the very bottom risks overheating the vessel and the surface beneath it. Leave at least 1cm of wax at the base - and if you have a tin candle, consider repurposing it as a planter or storage pot once finished.

7. Use a snuffer, not your breath

Blowing out a candle sends a plume of smoke through the room and can disturb the wax surface. A candle snuffer extinguishes the flame cleanly and preserves the scent throw for your next burn.
