Spilled candle wax is one of those minor household disasters that looks worse than it is. Whether it has landed on a tablecloth, a carpet, a wooden surface, or a glass holder, there is a reliable method for removing it cleanly. Here is a surface-by-surface guide.
The golden rule: let it set first
Whatever surface the wax has landed on, resist the urge to wipe it up while it is still liquid. Liquid wax spreads and soaks in. Let it cool and harden completely before attempting removal. You can speed this up by placing a bag of ice over the wax for a few minutes.
Fabric and tablecloths
- Once the wax is hard, gently flex the fabric to crack and flake off as much as possible.
- Place the fabric between two sheets of plain brown paper or paper towels.
- Press a warm iron over the paper. The heat melts the wax and the paper absorbs it. Move to a clean section of paper as it becomes saturated.
- Repeat until no more wax transfers to the paper.
- Treat any remaining colour stain with a small amount of washing-up liquid before laundering as normal.
Carpet and rugs
- Let the wax harden, then break off as much as possible by hand or with a blunt knife.
- Vacuum up the loose pieces.
- Place a damp cloth over the remaining wax and press a warm iron over it. The wax transfers to the cloth.
- For any residual colour, apply a small amount of carpet cleaner or rubbing alcohol with a clean cloth, blotting rather than rubbing.
Wood and hard surfaces
- Once hardened, use a plastic scraper or an old credit card to lift the wax away. Avoid metal tools on polished wood as they can scratch.
- For any residue, apply a small amount of furniture polish or a cloth dampened with white vinegar and buff gently.
- On unfinished or raw wood, a hairdryer on a low setting can soften stubborn residue, which can then be wiped away with a soft cloth.
Glass candle holders
Glass is the easiest surface to clean. Place the holder in the freezer for an hour. The wax contracts and pops away from the glass cleanly. Any remaining residue wipes away with warm soapy water.
Tin candle vessels
The same freezer method works well for tins. Once the wax has popped out, wipe the inside with a paper towel and wash with warm soapy water. Many of our tins make excellent small planters or storage pots once cleaned out.
Clothing
Follow the same method as for tablecloths. For delicate fabrics, skip the iron and instead place the garment in a sealed bag in the freezer, then flake off the hardened wax carefully. Always check the care label before applying heat.
