What is a pillar candle?
A pillar candle is a freestanding candle that does not require a vessel. It is typically cylindrical, though square and tapered pillar candles are also common. Pillar candles are usually made from harder waxes than container candles, as they need to hold their shape without the support of a jar or tin.
Wax types for pillar candles
Pillar candles are most commonly made from paraffin, beeswax, or a blend of harder waxes. Pure soy wax is too soft for freestanding pillar candles, which is why most soy candles are made in containers. If you are looking for a natural pillar candle, beeswax is the best option.
How to burn a pillar candle correctly
Pillar candles require slightly different care from container candles:
- Always use a candle holder or plate. As the wax melts, it can drip. A proper holder catches drips and protects your surfaces.
- Hug the candle as it burns. Unlike container candles, pillar candles benefit from gently folding the softened outer edge inward as the wax melts. This prevents the sides from collapsing and extends the burn time.
- Trim the wick to 5mm before every burn. The same rule applies as for all candles.
- Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time. Allow the candle to cool and reharden between burns.
- Keep away from draughts. Pillar candles are more susceptible to uneven burning in draughty conditions than container candles.
Styling pillar candles
Pillar candles are one of the most effective home styling tools available. A few ideas:
- Group in odd numbers: Three or five pillar candles of different heights grouped together creates a more dynamic and visually interesting arrangement than an even number.
- Vary the heights: Combining tall, medium, and short pillar candles adds depth and visual interest to a display.
- Use a tray or plate: Grouping pillar candles on a decorative tray or slate plate creates a cohesive display and catches any wax drips.
- Add natural elements: Dried botanicals, pebbles, or seasonal foliage around the base of pillar candles adds texture and warmth to a display.
