Soy vs Paraffin Candles: Which Is Better?

If you have ever wondered why some candles cost more than others, or why a candle from one brand smells stronger than another, the answer often comes down to one thing: the wax. Soy and paraffin are the two most common candle waxes on the market, and they behave very differently. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.

What is paraffin wax?

Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining and has been the dominant candle wax for over a century. It is inexpensive, widely available, and holds fragrance well at high concentrations, which is why many mass-market candles use it.

The downsides: paraffin is a non-renewable resource, and when burned it can release trace amounts of soot and volatile compounds. In a well-ventilated room this is not a significant concern, but it is worth knowing if you burn candles frequently.

What is soy wax?

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, a renewable and biodegradable resource. It was developed in the 1990s as a cleaner alternative to paraffin and has grown steadily in popularity since.

Key characteristics of soy wax:

  • Cleaner burn: Soy produces significantly less soot than paraffin, keeping your walls, ceilings, and vessel cleaner.
  • Longer burn time: Soy wax burns at a lower temperature, which means it melts more slowly. A soy candle will typically outlast a paraffin candle of the same size by 30 to 50 percent.
  • Better scent throw over time: Because soy burns cooler, fragrance is released more gradually, giving a consistent scent throughout the life of the candle rather than a strong initial hit that fades.
  • Renewable and biodegradable: Soy is a plant-based material, making it a more sustainable choice.

The trade-offs

Soy wax is not without its limitations. It is more expensive than paraffin, which is reflected in the price of soy candles. It can also be more sensitive to temperature changes during shipping and storage, sometimes developing a white, powdery surface called frosting. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect burn quality or scent.

Paraffin, on the other hand, produces a very strong cold throw (the scent you smell before lighting), which some people prefer when shopping in a store.

Which should you choose?

For everyday home use, soy wax is the better choice. The cleaner burn, longer life, and sustainable sourcing make it worth the modest price difference. If you burn candles regularly, the reduced soot alone is a compelling reason to switch.

For gifting, soy candles also present better: the wax stays smooth and creamy-looking for longer, and the slower scent release means the recipient enjoys the fragrance throughout the candle rather than just at the start.
