The UK scented candle market has never been more competitive, which is good news for buyers. But with so many options available, knowing what separates a genuinely great scented candle from a disappointing one is more important than ever. Here is what to look for.
What makes a scented candle genuinely good?
A great scented candle does three things consistently: it smells wonderful before you light it, it fills the room with fragrance when burning, and it maintains that fragrance throughout its life rather than fading after the first few burns. Achieving all three requires quality at every stage of production.
Cold throw vs hot throw
Cold throw is the fragrance you smell from an unlit candle. Hot throw is the fragrance released when the candle is burning. Both matter, but hot throw is more important for everyday use. A candle with a strong cold throw but a weak hot throw is a common disappointment.
When buying online, read reviews that specifically mention hot throw. When buying in person, a candle that smells strong in the shop will usually perform well at home.
Wax type
Soy wax is the preferred choice for quality scented candles. It holds fragrance more evenly than paraffin, burns more cleanly, and releases scent more gradually and consistently throughout the candle's life. Most of the best independent candle makers in the UK use soy wax.
Fragrance quality
The quality of the fragrance oil makes an enormous difference to the finished candle. Quality fragrance oils are expensive, which is one reason genuinely good scented candles cost more than mass-market alternatives. Look for makers who develop their own fragrance blends rather than using generic catalogue scents.
Burn time
A quality scented candle should clearly state its burn time. For a small to medium candle, expect at least 20 to 30 hours. For a larger candle, 40 to 60 hours or more. If a candle does not state a burn time, that is a red flag.
The maker
Small independent British candle makers consistently outperform large brands on quality because they put their budget into materials and production rather than marketing. Look for makers who are transparent about their ingredients, their production process, and where their candles are made.
Reviews
Genuine customer reviews are the most reliable guide to candle performance. Look for reviews that mention specific details: how the candle smells, how long it lasted, whether the fragrance held throughout the burn. Generic five-star reviews with no detail are less useful.
