The word "handmade" gets used a lot in the candle industry. You will find it on the packaging of candles made in factories, on products poured by machines, and on imports that have never been near a craftsperson's hands. So what does it actually mean — and how do you know when it is genuine?
At The Victorian Candle Co., handmade is not a marketing word. It is a description of exactly how every candle we sell is made, in our workshop on Lowther Street in Carlisle.
What happens in our workshop
Every candle starts with soy wax flakes, which we weigh and melt in small batches. We do not use a continuous production line. Each batch is poured by hand into its tin or vessel, at a carefully controlled temperature that affects how the wax sets, how the scent binds, and how evenly the candle will burn.
The fragrance is blended in by hand at the right moment in the cooling process — too early and it burns off, too late and it does not bind properly. The wick is centred by hand and held in place while the wax sets. Each finished candle is inspected individually before it is labelled and packed.
This is not a romantic description of an automated process. It is what actually happens, every time, for every candle.
Why small batches matter
Large-scale candle production prioritises consistency and speed. Small-batch production prioritises quality and control. When you pour 12 candles at a time rather than 1,200, you notice when something is off. You can adjust the temperature, the fragrance load, the pour speed. You cannot do that at scale.
Our small-batch approach also means we can work with fragrance combinations that would be impractical to produce commercially — scents that require precise timing, or that behave differently in different ambient temperatures. It gives us creative freedom that factory production does not allow.
What "handmade" does not mean
It does not mean primitive or inconsistent. Our candles burn evenly, throw scent well, and perform reliably because we have refined our process over years of making them by hand. Handmade and high quality are not in tension — in our case, the handmade process is precisely why the quality is high.
It also does not mean expensive for its own sake. Our prices reflect the cost of quality materials — 100% soy wax, premium fragrance oils, cotton wicks — and the time it takes to make each candle properly. You are not paying a premium for a label. You are paying for what is actually in the tin.

If you want to see the process for yourself, our workshops are open to the public. You will leave with candles you made with your own hands — which is, after all, the point.
Why it matters to us
There is a version of this business that would be easier. We could outsource production, import finished candles, and spend our time on marketing instead of making. We have chosen not to do that, because the making is the point.
Every candle that leaves our workshop on Lowther Street was touched by human hands at every stage of its creation. That is what handmade means to us — and we think it is worth saying clearly, in a market where the word has been stretched well beyond its original meaning.
